Kaidan walked from the elevator into the mess. It was still early, and only two crewmen were there, besides the Commander.
Shepard stood near the serving counter with a cup of steaming coffee and a datapad.
"Morning, Commander" Kaidan said, joining her and taking a cup for himself.

"Good morning, Lieutenant,"

As usual when Shepard beat him to the mess the coffee was made extremely dark, just as he liked it. She hated it, and always added lots of milk and sugar. When he beat her, he made it lighter so she didn't have to add anything.
Kaidan wondered idly if any of the crew noticed the difference each day, but then they went through so much coffee made by so many different people he supposed not.
Kaidan raised the cup to his face and inhaled the scent, enjoying how strong it was.
He glanced at Shepard as he took his first sip and noticed her looking off into space with an amused look.

"What's so funny?" He asked.

"Hmm? Oh, I was just thinking how grateful I am we have a controlled climate," Shepard smiled.

"What? What on earth made you think of that?"

"The coffee. Well, it's kind of a jump actually,"

Kaidan leaned comfortably against the counter.
"Yeah?" He encouraged her.

"Well, when I was young my family, mom and me, and my uncle, we would go camping every summer. He always made strong coffee like this," Shepard tipped her cup and looked at the contents carefully before continuing.
"I was just thinking about the only time we didn't finish the trip. When I was 12. It was so hot and humid that year we ended up abandoning our camp site and going to a hotel with a nice pool instead," Shepard laughed, apparently thinking of something involving the hotel.
"Anyway, it just made me think of how one advantage of working in space is you never have to worry about it being too warm or sticky," Shepard shrugged, her train of thought complete.

Kiadan smirked.
"It can get pretty cold though," He commented.

Shepard gave a half smile in response.
"Hopefully that won't ever be a problem for the Normandy," she teased.
Shepard eased herself upright and yawned.
"Well, better go get this report sent off. We'll be taking a shuttle to Eingana in a couple of hours, and I don't want this hanging over my head while we're there," Shepard said as she started to walk away.

"Woah, Eingana? Why're we going there?" Kaidan asked.

Shepard turned halfway back to look at him.
"Just checking it out. It's dangerous to be sure, but that doesn't mean there couldn't be Geth hiding out there. We have to check every planet in the system remember? Don't lose track of time. You're part of the ground team," Shepard gave him her ever so slight smirk and continued off to her quarters, empty coffee cup in hand.

Kaidan shook his head as he finished his own coffee. She was always walking around with an empty coffee cup lately it seemed. He'd have to talk to her about getting more rest the next time he got the chance to talk to her privately.

Shepard had her armor almost completely on, just her helmet under her arm as she talked with Gladstone  near the crew quarters.
Joker had given her a 15 minute ETA to Eingana and she didn't want to waste time by not being ready.

"Thanks Gladstone," Shepard said nodding in appreciation as the crewman turned to go. Shepard was about to walk down towards the shuttle bay to prep for launch when the ship lurched and alarms started sounding.
Shepard quickly tapped on her comm to hear what was going on. She was about to call Joker but could hear that he was well aware of the situation and trying to deal with it.
"An unknown ship?" Shepard didn't know what Joker and the ship's instruments were seeing but she didn't have to. She knew it was bad. The ship was pitching like it was in a hurricane at sea, she could hear explosions both near and in the distance. Everyone was yelling and running to their stations.

Shepard set her teeth and ran to the console in the crew section. She knew there was nothing to be done, she could feel it in the way the ship shivered and hear it in the moaning sound of the metal. She gave the order to abandon ship and then started sending a mayday and preparing the distress beacon.

"Shepard!" She heard Kaidan's voice behind her and, putting on her helmet, turned to face him and tell him what she was doing.
"Joker's still in the cockpit! He won't abandon ship. I'm not leaving either," Kaidan said.

"I need you to get the crew into the evac shuttles. I'll take care of Joker," Shepard grabbed the wall for support as the ship lurched sideways again.

"Commander..." Kaidan started but Shepard interrupted.

"Kaidan, go. Now," she said firmly.

"...Aye aye," he said, then turned and started towards the shuttles, making sure each area was clear as he did.
The alarms seemed to be growing louder, though that was impossible.
Kaidan felt his heart pounding painfully in his chest with it.
He grabbed the doorway into the shuttle as he motioned crewmen through. All the rooms he had gone through were clear, there was no more time.
There was an explosion, he saw crewmen Negulesco fall. He bit his lip and ducked into the shuttle, he could see there was nothing to be done for her.

The sound of the alarm was finally gone, and now all Kaidan could hear was his own breathing within his helmet. The comm was nothing but static, so he had turned it off. He looked out the window back towards the Normandy. Large pieces of it were floating away from the main hull out into space, drifting down into the near planet's gravity. What planet was that? He didn't even know, he couldn't think.
He could hear his breathing stabilizing, though the sick feeling in his stomach left from panic lingered on.

His eyes were drawn quickly back to the wreck as it exploded, its light sparking brightly for a moment before fading and going dark as the fires were exposed to the vacuum of space.
He suddenly noticed how badly his head hurt, but there was nothing he could do in full armor in the escape shuttle. He focused again on the wreck which was getting further and further away. The ship that had attacked them was gone, he hadn't even seen it once.
Oddly, his thoughts went to what Shepard would do for a ship now, she was so attached to the Normandy.

Kaidan blinked as he rapidly turned his head away from the sun of the Amada system, which came into view, blindingly bright.
This is something I've had in my head that just had to get out.
It is really just me writing what happened with one particular Shepard of mine(Jane) before the attack on the Normandy in ME2. I would imagine it differently for all my Sheps.

The idea behind how I wrote this is that nothing exciting, out of the ordinary, or even interesting really happens in it. I wanted to show how quickly the attack came on them, how unexpected it was, and how even as it was happening and right after nobody really understood its impact. They wouldn't find out what they had truly lost until they were all rescued and Shepard...wasn't there.

Also, I realize that the ending is somewhat abrupt, but I didn't want to just keep on going and going. And it has significance if you think about it, well, to me at least.

I'll probably be writing some follow-up pieces with Kaiden and my Jane Shep, but I'm not going to label them as chapters because I plan on making each one independent, and readable on their own.
